Experience
Pinzgau tradition

The Hasenaualm is located at 1.562 m on the Reiterkogel. Between May and October our guests get to come with us to the Alpine pasture and experience a bit of Pinzgau tradition. Since the pasture is not publicly accessible, you get to enjoy total tranquillity here. In the summer our dairy cows graze on our Alpine pastures and they are milked there too.

Tauernschecken goats
the mountain goats of the Hohe Tauern.

The Tauernschecken goat belongs to the mountain goat breed. It is a particularly vigorous and long-lived mountain goat. Originally they were found in the valleys and pastures in the Hohe Tauern and around the Großglockner. The Tauernschecken goat provides an acceptable amount of milk which is used in our production of original Pinzgauer cheese.

This mountain goat is also identifiable by the high position of its udders, which helps protect it from sharp rock edges and from brambles. The colouring of its short coat is no coincidence either - the coat is mottled in brown, white and black. The eyes and ears of these goats are clearly pigmented, which is something that farmers appreciate since it makes it easier to find the animals when there are early snowfalls. The rest of the goat's head is white which protects the creatures from the intensity of the sun's rays on the high alpine pastures. The Tauernschecken goat is a highly endangered domestic animal breed. We have around 30 that live here, and they have been bread with a great deal of care.

Noriker horses
agile and surefooted.

These are just two characteristics that make the Noriker a popular breed of the mountainous areas of the Austrian Alps. These mountain draft horses are also very strong and persevering. The breed also has a very even temperament and a good-natured character. These characteristics, combined with their exceptional gait and steady trot makes the Noriker a safe and reliable partner in the cavalry.

A special feature of the Noriker is its variety of colours, as well as the most prominent black, chestnut and bay, there are also blue roan, spotted leopard complex and jagged patterns, which makes the breed quite eye-catching.

The landscape, climate and its use in farming have characterised this medium-weight horse. They have been loyal companions for farmers for centuries and are invaluable to the cultural heritage of Austria. There are 3-4 Noriker horses on our farm, which are primarily used for breeding.

Pinzgauer cattles
a breed of cattle for the rugged mountain realm.

Pinzgauer cattle were formerly not just used for milk and meat, their strength was also put to good use. Until the 19th century these animals were still used in farming and they were used by breweries as draught oxen. The Pinzgauer cow is outstanding in extreme climatic conditions and is well suited to the steep terrain in high Alpine terrain. The animals are chestnut brown and have a white marking typical to the breed that extends from its withers, across its back to its lower chest. Its udders and tail are also white.

There are around 45 Pingauer beef cattle on our farm and on the pastures that are bred out of conviction and to uphold tradition.

Tyrol grey cattle.

This rare dual purpose, traditional breed is suitable for the mountains and is one of the oldest cattle breeds in the Alpine area. Tyrol grey cattle belong to the Grey Mountain cattle sub-group. Their skin is black and their coat is plain-coloured - a silvery, iron-grey, browny grey, with lighter and darker flecks.

Typical characteristics of this robust cow are its red mane, black horn tips and ist hard black hooves. This creature is accustomed to extreme, changing weather conditions and temperature fluctuations. On one of our many holidays in South Tyrol, in 2015 we brought two Tyrol grey cattle calves to our farm, as 'holiday pick-ups'. Of this breed, we currently have one cow, one heifer, 1 female calf and two oxen here at the Feriengut.

Sulmtaler chickens.

This Austrian breed of domestic fowl was developed in Austria in 1880 from the Styrian farm chicken. The hen's laying performance is vast and with good feed this is feasible. Sulmtaler chickens are a hardy dual purpose breed. They grow quickly and are excellent feed converters.

The chickens have a quiet temperament and can fly well in spite of their bulk. On the farm there are currently 10 hens, 1 cock and around 30 chicks. The Sulmtaler chicken is an endangered chicken breed.

Alpine Stone Sheep.

The Alpine Stone Sheep is one of the oldest sheep breeds. The Stone Sheep are excellently suited to the terrain and the climate of the high mountains. Their colouring and markings are very varied. Their physique is very delicate and they have very hard claws. This breed of sheep is only kept in smaller herd sizes these days and is one of the most endangered sheep breeds in our culture. On the Feriengut there is currently 1 ram, 6 ewes and about 8 lambs.
